Telling Local Climate Stories Through Community Television

Community Host – YourTV (Cogeco TV)

Role: Dan Hendry

Year: 2010–present

For several years, I have worked as a Community Host and Producer with YourTV (Cogeco TV), a community television channel serving the Kingston region. In this role, I helped produce and present local stories, most often focused on climate action, sustainability, and community impact.

My work spanned a range of production formats. I participated in live‑to‑tape studio programming, including talk shows and short segments, as well as on‑location video production using handheld equipment to capture stories directly in the community. Over time, I contributed to multiple series and projects, gaining experience across different styles of community broadcasting.

My responsibilities included writing scripts, producing storyboards, connecting with individuals and community groups, and appearing on air as a host. Through this work, I developed practical experience translating complex topics into accessible stories and learned how to effectively guide conversations for a public audience.

During my time with YourTV, the work I contributed to was recognized with a YourTV Star Award within a large broadcast system. This recognition reflected the collaborative effort required to produce high‑quality local programming with community impact.

In addition to shorter segments and studio programming, I worked with YourTV to produce a 30‑minute documentary on the circular economy during the COVID‑19 period. The documentary explored themes related to waste, resource use, and sustainability and remains available online. This project combined research, interviews, and long‑form storytelling and represented a significant component of my work with the channel.

Overall, this role provided extensive experience in community storytelling, media production, and public communication, and reinforced the value of community television as an accessible platform for sharing local climate and sustainability initiatives.
