A World Without Trash

In the modern world, waste management has become a growing concern. We produce tons of waste every day, and the majority of it ends up in landfills. But what if we could live in a world without trash? That's the question addressed in "A World Without Trash: Designing the Circular Economy”, a documentary I hosted and organized with YourTV Kingston.

Since 2010, I’ve worked with YourTV Kingston (formerly TVCogeco) as a Community Producer and Host, leading series including “Kingston Change Makers” (3 seasons) and “A Climate for Change” (1 Season), as well as over 40 additional segments promoting sustainable action and change in Kingston.

The "A World Without Trash: Designing the Circular Economy” documentary emphasizes the importance of taking action against waste production. It highlights the fact that waste has become a global issue that needs to be tackled immediately. It shows how the traditional linear economy, where resources are extracted, processed, and then disposed of, has led to environmental degradation and social inequalities.

The video also introduces the concept of a circular economy, which aims to create a closed-loop system where waste is minimized, and resources are continuously reused.  I then explain several innovative examples of circular economy design in Kingston, including a composting system for urban agriculture, a clothing rental service, and a program that repurposes discarded electronics. Throughout the documentary I speak to and give platforms to these innovative and sustainable experts including Kingston’s Li-Cycle team who sustainably recycle lithium-ion batteries.

My goal with the documentary is to reinforce the importance of designing products with circularity in mind. This means considering the entire lifecycle of a product, from its design to its end-of-life. By doing so, it is possible to create products that are not only environmentally sustainable but also economically viable.

Additionally, I wanted to emphasize the importance of changing our consumption habits. By reducing our consumption and choosing products that are environmentally friendly, we can significantly reduce our waste production.

By adopting a circular economy approach, we can live in a world without trash and preserve our planet for future generations.

We all need to shift towards a more conscious and sustainable lifestyle.
