Growing Climate Resilience Through Community Tree Planting

Community Tree Initiative – Loyalist Township

Role: Dan Hendry

During tenure, 2020–present

In my role with Loyalist Township, I supported the Community Tree Initiative, a program designed to make tree planting more accessible to residents while advancing goals within the Resilient Loyalist Township Climate Action Plan. The initiative focuses on purchasing trees at wholesale prices, securing grant funding to offset costs, and offering trees to residents at a steep discount to encourage widespread participation.

My involvement supported several core components of the program. This work included grant writing, community coordination, communications, distribution planning, grant pickup logistics, and wholesaling. Together, these efforts were aimed at ensuring the initiative was both financially viable and straightforward for residents to take part in.

A key element of the program was cross‑departmental collaboration within the Township. Multiple departments contributed to the delivery of the initiative, and my role included supporting clear communication and coordination across teams so that responsibilities, timelines, and expectations were aligned. This internal coordination was essential to delivering the program effectively to the public.

The Community Tree Initiative directly supports objectives outlined in the Township’s Climate Action Plan, particularly those related to increasing tree canopy and strengthening local climate resilience. All of this work was carried out as part of my role with Loyalist Township, reinforcing how practical, community‑focused programs can advance climate goals at the municipal level.
