One of the most rewarding speaking experiences of Dan’s work in climate action was delivering a keynote address at the Youth Climate Action Summit, hosted by the Frontenac Arch Biosphere at the Kingston Frontenac Public Library. The event brought together over 120 students from across Eastern Ontario, all eager to explore how they could play a role in addressing climate change and building a more sustainable future.

For this event, Dan co‑delivered a 45-minute keynote titled Hope Through Action alongside his friend and collaborator Cedric Pepelea, who works on energy programs in Indigenous communities. The two intentionally designed the session to demonstrate that meaningful change does not require waiting for permission or perfect conditions it begins with action, curiosity, and collaboration.

 

Together, the goal was to move beyond narratives of fear or helplessness and offer students a clearer sense of agency. At the core of the keynote was a simple idea: hope is something you create through action. Dan and Cedric encouraged students to recognize that the skills they already use—critical thinking, collaboration, and experimentation are powerful tools for real‑world climate solutions.

Engaging directly with such a thoughtful and motivated group of young people was deeply energizing. Their questions, ideas, and enthusiasm reinforced their belief that while climate change is complex, it also presents an opportunity to build more connected and resilient communities. Supporting youth as they develop confidence in their ability to act continues to be one of the most meaningful aspects of his work.
