Serving Community Through Cooperative Governance

Board of Directors – Kingston Community Credit Union

Role: Dan Hendry

Year: Present

I currently serve on the Board of Directors of the Kingston Community Credit Union (KCCU). This role reflects my interest in governance and cooperative models for business, as well as my desire to contribute to organizations that are deeply rooted in community values.

Through my work on the board, I have spent significant time learning about financial regulatory systems in Ontario and across Canada. This learning has been grounded in the seven cooperative principles that guide credit unions and the broader cooperative movement. These principles provide a consistent framework for understanding how cooperative organizations operate, govern themselves, and make decisions in ways that prioritize member and community well‑being.

Serving on the board has been a meaningful learning experience. By participating directly in governance processes, I have gained practical insight into how cooperative organizations function, how regulatory responsibilities are managed, and how decision‑making structures can remain aligned with community‑focused values. This experience has reinforced for me the importance of participation, accountability, and engagement within cooperative structures.

Overall, this role has deepened my understanding of how governance supports long‑term, community‑based institutions and how cooperative models can offer viable, values‑driven alternatives within the financial sector.
